The server can be defined by its IP address, or its domain name. This server can reside on the local network, or on the internet. Once the instrument is connected to the access point, it will attempt to contact the IP address or domain name of the server. A domain name is often used in conjunction with a DDNS service. This allows the IP address of the server to change over time, without affecting the connection.
Note: When the server is not on the local network, the configuration of the router it is connected to is more complicated. See section 8.7.4.
